First off, my wife pointed out that all I do here is bitch and moan. She's right...as usual...but this is my voice right now. I do this for those of you, who, for some reason, give a crap what I think. To you I say thank you. Now on to the reason why I'm typing.
I watched a local station's 6pm news and today's noon news and once again I'm stunned by the lack of real world perspective. A Lorain County Sheriff's Deputy was shot and that doesn't lead the news. Nope, a story about Colt McCoy's concussion lead the news. So, am I to understand that a man who's job is to protect and serve being shot is less important of a story than a guy who plays a kids game for millions of dollars. Really? This is where, I believe, the lack of real world perspective comes in. Its a TV stations job to get eyeballs to their station, but its also their job to report actual news. For some reason, people feel anything with the Browns still counts as top news. Newsflash! The Browns STINK AND SHOULD NOT LEAD ANY NEWSCAST. As much as I love football and sports in general, I have the perspective to realize its a sport! In the real world, a deputy was shot. Is he going to live? Yes, but that should not diminish the story of an officer of the law being shot! I have two theories as to why this didn't lead the news. 1) He's going to live. 2) The man who shot the deputy was a psycho white guy. Therefore, the race angle is dead. The race angle always gets eyeballs to screens. That maybe really cynical of me. I could be right though.
The Browns have become a Lady Gaga song that is over played and everybody is tired of. Enough. The Browns are, once again, awful. Their next home game will be against the Stillers on the last week of the season and the stadium will be filled with more Stillers fans than Browns fans. Which SHOULD tell you everything you need to know your coverage. It can be brought down a notch...or seven. Nobody cares about a team with 4 wins and will have ANOTHER losing season.
I don't think it's too much to ask of local news to keep the real world in perspective. Do you?
