The Navy Uses Xbox Controllers To Operate Submarine Periscopes

A nuclear submarine costs millions, if not billions, of dollars to produce.  And at the center of one of its most crucial systems is a $30 Xbox controller.

The folks at Cracked recently reminded us that in 2017, the Navy began installing Xbox 360 controllers to operate the sub's 'photonic mast' - the modern version of a periscope.

Navy officials settled on the Xbox controller because it was durable, offered precise analog controls, and because most sailors were already familiar with it.
